1. Abdenour Saaid - September 18, 2013

I would like to know if there is any documentation and/or how to instructions for the “agponicMD”.
Cheers

rik94566 - September 29, 2013

@ abdenour – good news for you. Up to now there was no documentation on the agponicMD unit. But now I will be building another one and will be blogging about the construction. So stay tuned over the next 4 weeks or so and you will have a good idea of the unit is put together.

Elias Arredondo - September 29, 2013

Good news indeed!

2. Glenn Martinez - October 13, 2013

I am building a greenhouse and want to use Arduino control system. I am MOST interested in your DASHBOARD….I find that appealing. I do not want to bog down in learning programming, I just want to set my parameters of satisfactory operation. I also want the text and dialer for alarms. Appreciate any leads you have.

rik94566 - October 15, 2013

Glenn – good to hear from you. I seem like just a short time ago we were talking at the Denver Conference after my presentation and you had lots of questions. Glad to know you are doing well and still interested in automation of systems. As for the greenhouse automation aspect and arduino. As always it depends on how big you are planning. I do not think arduinos can handle large systems without a lot of programing help. The best way I have seen to handle this is to use a Raspberry Pi and feed the arduino sensor date into it. Then you could do a larger greenhouse setup. On small greenhouse like hobby one the arduino will do just fine. You will need some help maybe on the tech side to get the APduino API working as I have found that to be somewhat difficult, but once you learn it things go well and you will have all the thing you are looking for without having to be a programer and they have great tech support for us hackers.

3. Glenn Martinez - October 13, 2013

Looking for DASHBOARD and TEXTING capability.
Appreciate any leads.

rik94566 - October 15, 2013

Glenn – use APduino in combination with Xively. Then you will be able to have it all.

4. Quentin - March 23, 2014

Hello,

I’m really impress by your agponics MD. I want to buy one to study on it. Moreover I need to make a short internship (4 weeks) to conclude my year of study that’s why,

I want to know If it’s possible to “assist” you during the construction?

Thank you

Quentin
.

rik94566 - March 25, 2014

Quentin – I responded to your request directly. Let me know if you did not get it and I can resend it to you. rik

Gregory Wong - May 1, 2014

Me too please! I live in the east bay and would love to help if I can!

5. dodopaperparty - March 30, 2014

You are an amazing person, and your project really is the way of the future. Congrats , really inspiring initiative.

Just one small question (I assume you are retired now), what was your qualification / job ? I’m just trying to understand why my 55 year old parents can only send an email and surf the web, and you thought about implementing arduino into farming. (basically i’m trying to find out what kind of person/mindset does it take to achieve this)

Thank You !

rik94566 - April 24, 2014

@dodopaperparty – thanks for viewing the video and checking out my blog on this subject. For the record – I am not retired nor thinking about it any time soon. It has always been in my nature to keep learning and trying new things at what ever age I am. So to answer your question regarding mind set – It is a state of mind and we all can change that by using technology to our advantage even if we don’t understand it fully. Just give it a go. I knew nothing about aquaponics when I started and just had to start some place and that was a small system.

Gregory Wong - May 1, 2014

If there was a “like” button on this thread, I’d press it now for your response. Kudos to you! Hope to meet soon – I’ll be at the Maker Faire, but hope to meet before that.

6. Rick - May 3, 2014

I can’t see in the picture what the plants are growing in. Are there little individual net pots or do you fill the tower up with gravel, or something else? You’ve got a great story here. Very interesting. Thanks.

rik94566 - May 23, 2014

Rick – I use either plastic grow inserts or clone plugs purchased at hydro shops and they fit into the pockets. I use a mesh net inside the tubes and can make the density any amount that I want depending on the crop or water flow needed when using it.

7. Kevin - May 26, 2014

Aloha Rik, All I can say is wow!!!! How do I get started doing what you’re doing?

rik94566 - May 27, 2014

Kevin – where in Aloha Land do you live. My daughter lives on Maui and we get there quite often. As for starting, you should start with a small system. Many can be found on Instructables with good plans and lots of details. If you want to automate then my blog is the best source as only one other person is doing it at a scale that makes sense. He does not have a blog and does not share much information to help others.

8. Dan - December 14, 2014

Rik – any chance you’ll have a full build documentation available for this unit? The engineer in me would rather build it than buy it, plus it looks like a great project to do with my kids!

Thanks!

rik94566 - April 21, 2015

Dan – nice you question – I have been working on documentation for a balcony unit and will release everything I have done at Maker Faire – San Mateo – May 16-18, 2015. This will be published in Maker Magazine in Vol 47 edition. Was going to be before now but got behind in the development process. If you go to Maker Faire stop by and say hi…… rik

9. beereighty - December 30, 2014

could you elaborate on the plastic inserts please. Ive been using the grow plugs alone but think some light support in the holes is necessary. cant find any light structured inserts like i see in the video. Thank you for the inspiration

rik94566 - April 21, 2015

check my resources page on this site – all the details are there… rik

10. Christine Crahan - October 10, 2015

Hi Rik! Just wanted to say thanks so much for sharing your aquaponics system with the world. I watched your youtube video about a year ago and loved your automated system. I’m going to try to build your Maker system as my first hydroponics experiment. Wish me luck! Ive been reading about different systems for about a year now and its finally time for me to get my feet wet. I’m located in Orange County, CA perfect for outdoor hydroponics 🙂

rik94566 - October 13, 2015

Christine – glad to know that you are jumping in and getting started. Orange County is a great place to have a system …. best of luck to you – you are going to do great ….rik

11. Aquaponics Team - March 14, 2016

we are building the aquaponic garden and we have arrived at the fist tank step and we were wondering if you could fill in the missing steps?

rik94566 - March 17, 2016

Hi – I will take a look at it this weekend and put up some pictures that can help you out with the fish tank. rik

Aquaponics Team - March 23, 2016

Thank you

12. Aquaponics Team - April 21, 2016

Ok we saw your picture but could you upload some instructions

13. Kevin - July 30, 2016

Aloha Rik, what would it take to get you to come to Lanai, Hawaii to help us get started?

rik94566 - August 1, 2016

Not much – I was just on Maui for 12 days. I took a tour of Lanai when I was there for New Years. The guide was talking about a big hydroponic or aquaponics project planned to grow close to town. Would this part of that? rik

14. artemas - July 6, 2017

Howdy
I saw your vid and after having been trying to learn C++ to program my AP for like two months now I have gotten bogged down. Earlier Martinez asked about the program you spoke of wherein you used drop downs to program you arduino to do specific things. He asked about the program but you never answered his question as to where we can access that same program to alleviate, at least for now, the programming portion of this. Please give me info on what program you were using to program and where I may obtain access to it. Thanks!

rik94566 - July 21, 2017

artemas – there is a lot to get done with code and C++ is a hard way to go. The guy and app you are interested in and talked about in the video are now no longer that I know of. The solution that I think will work best for you is “Cayenne” Cayenne MY DEVICESIt should be very close to helping get to where you need to be on this effort
